Its CTN this weekend - basically Comic con except a fith of the size and JUST for animation - I'm have a blast looking at all the briliant artists and informative panels they have to offer - One of the best was the one today on character design - I thought I'd post the notes I took here so you guys can use them to - Enjoy! ^_^
Good Character
- someone you want to get to know
- Silhouette
- Range
- Re-invent yourself
- Understand principals of design
- Understand people/ characters/ personalities
- Look at them as two different disciplines or skill sets
- Observation
- How do people think
- what ISN'T said
- Look at story set up
- Lots of research
- Discuss with the directors
- Are the characters geared towards other characters in history
- Have a focus - the clearer the focus the better
- Know the characters well and you'll get the bullseye
- Look at the world for inspiration
- fascination with personification
- animators set the look of the character
- Get close to the subject - get in touch with the real thing - start from scratch
- Put yourself in the characters shoes
- things that are compelled to move a certain way -
- something that looks good moving around
- there are some limitations with 3D and 2D
- Try and design things that are simple yet effective and easy to read
- Break the character down graphically
- Graphic clarity - not detail
- Understand animation!
Also I'm going to be adding a few more coloured pieces soon so stay tuned for that - thanks for stopping by! ^_^
